Why Should You Do a Cleanse?
Just like your Birthday, Christmas and Thanksgiving, it is nice to celebrate your life and your health with a yearly cleanse. You can choose two weeks or two months, but nothing is better for general health, recovering from an illness and getting to know yourself than a deep and thorough cleanse!
As a clinician I recommend cleansing to almost all of my patients for several reasons. My main reason is that most people eat too much food and consume excessive amounts of sugar, caffeine and alcohol. Your body needs some time to do a bit of inner house cleaning every once in a while, and it can only do that when you eat simply and remove stimulants and intoxicants from your life completely. From a simply common sense and historical perspective, all of our ancestors had to eat simply (if at all) during early spring – which is the best time to do a cleanse.
While cleansing, I recommend that you drink at least 2 liters of water a day and try and drink half of your water in the first two hours of your day. We all know regular exercise is essential to a healthy metabolism and so are times of deep relaxation. In order for your body to do some inner house work you will also need deep and long opportunities to sleep every night. As well; taking medicinal herbs, nutritional supplements, probiotics and healthy essential fatty acids can make cleansing a time of deep restoration and healing.
The best thing I have seen a cleanse do for people, besides the health obvious health benefits, is a shift in self awareness. Committing a time to consistent self-care can challenge and bring to light many of the ways that each of us can unconsciously undermine our health. After 20 years of clinical practice I encourage you to commit some time to your health. If you need some support I offer an Eight Week Seasonal Health Challenge. The next one starts on Wednesday, March 25th at 6:30 pm. You can register until April 2nd.
